Project Evaluation

When I just started this project, I was at a loss about what kind of media should be used for the final outcome. Therefore, it is very important to do research at this time. Although I set the name of my project as Spiritual Mask, the common physical mask is a very good entry point for research. I searched Lyle XX's mask made of waste, Noh mask and Charles Freger's monster mask respectively, and had a preliminary understanding of the expression form of the mask. Later, I searched for Yang Yue’s makeup of animals, which changed my idea from a physical mask to something more digital and delicate.

My approach to research is that almost every time I conduct research on an artist, I will complete a small experiment by imitating him/her. When I go through the same steps as the artists, I could better understand artists’ ideas and help me produce my idea later. I especially like the makeup of Yang Yue. Her paintings are very vivid and tidy, which makes people seem to be wearing a real mask. I also read a paper by Kinnison Li Qing. Kinnison’s article had a profound impact on my mask design and helped me better understand the generation of spiritual masks. The cow mask I designed was especially inspired by this article. The cow symbolizes a hard-working worker. I used the element of Mobius Ring to symbolize the boredom and repetition of the workplace, and the element of tears to reflect some employees who were squeezed and forced to participate in the company etiquette. Although the design of the cow mask was very smooth, It is still difficult to attach meaning to other spiritual mask I will do. Thus I kept doing research and collecting information of the spiritual masks.

Looking back on the time planning of my whole project, I don't think I did a good job at the beginning. At the beginning, I was confused for a long time, because I started to draw spiritual mask without doing sufficient research, my work has no meaning and was not beautiful. But then I realized that, I found direction instantly when I saw artist’s work I like. After that, my time plan became clear. I tried to complete research and some heavy tasks in the morning, so that I could optionally upload workflow and rest in the afternoon. I believe a balance between study and rest time is crucial.

Speaking of Reflection practice, I think staged introspection has helped me improved my style of the final outcome. I am a person who doesn't usually summarize things that have been done, so it's hard for me to judge whether something is good or bad. Therefore, reflection from my classmates and friends also helped me to better reveal each spiritual mask. Reviewing part 3, I did not plan well enough in the early stage, so I caught up a lot of content later. From this, I learned the lesson of time management, and I will try to make a more detailed schedule before I start my project in the future study. For me, Part 3 is also a new attempt for me. I have always been full of exploration spirit for digital art. This time, I have also completed a set of filters that I have always wanted to make with my own intention.

My final outcome is presenting as a set of AR filter. This is because AR Filter perfectly meets my expectation for this project, which is to show the spiritual masks, but at the same time keeping these spiritual masks virtual. Personally I think I achieved my initial goal. Although I scribbled a little on the content, I learned a lesson from it and will spend time explaining my future project so that the audience can better understand it. At the same time, I wish I can further develop this project. I think the presentation of the final content is not intuitive enough, I have always wanted to shoot a group of portrait works with the AR filter I made. However, due to the limitations of the epidemic and online courses, I failed to achieve this goal. I should also try coloring my spiritual mask. Most of the works in my research have bright and brisk colors, but my final product only uses white. If given more time and space, I believe that I can create more spiritual masks and let more people to try the AR filter.
